How to choose the right cameras?

An example with 3 most useful AXIS IP network cameras:

Understanding cameras » How to optimise the system»

Most common mistake

when buying video surveillance cameras is selecting the wrong FOCAL LENGTH of the camera.

Most common focal lengths are around 2.8 mm, 3.6/4 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm.

It's very important to know what are the objectives you want to monitor and therefore it's very important where the camera will be installed and which camera is the best to select. If you know exactly what to monitor and how, then fixed lens with one of the mentioned focal lengths above will be a good choice.

In case the scene will be more dynamic and may change somehow, most common situation is that the customer changes his mind shortly after the installation and would like to monitor wider or narrower area, or would like to cover also another nearby area, then fixed lens will not be so much cost effective solution because you will either have to buy a new camera (maybe also another video recorder) or uninstall, move and reinstall the camera which means much higher costs. Therefore in this case we recommend to buy a camera with a vari-focal lens from around 2-12 mm which offers re-set of the focal length (the angle of the view) on the camera itself without uninstalling, moving and reinstalling the camera. Even if it's a bit more expensive at the start, it will most probably pay off sooner or later and will be the cheapest solution at the end (according to the experience).

Here are different camera types explained:
